Can A ‘92 Honda Civic Air Conditioner Be Reconstructed? Is It Worth It?

I took my car to a ac tech. in mexico the other day he said the air wasn’t coming out cool cause the compressor was the problem and that it should be replaced. He then said that to install a new one would cost $500 including the instalation. I said no , and he offered to “REBUILD” it and so he did…..
a day later the air is still coming out hot and there’s a OILY FILM on the inside of my car’s windows……DID I GET SCREWED?

If you have an oily film inside it sounds like your evaporator is ruptured. it is located under or behind the dash inside a plastic housing and looks like a little aluminum radiator inside. If your lucky there may be a hose union inside that just needs a new o-ring, also at the evaporator. Overcharging with coolant can cause a rupture.

It sounds as if the tech simply tried to recharge the a/c rather than rebuild it. First off, the compressor components are rarely stocked on a shelf so a tech can run and change a ring or piston or a clutch. Thats bull. The majority of a/c service involves swapping out the spent compressor for either a remanufactured(factory) or new compressor w/clutch installed. He probably charged the system with the wrong refrigerant type-which led to your oily mess.

He messed up somewhere. Take it back.

There is one main hose that causes a problem. Check with local mechanics.
